What a great way to create a memory! Discover a new way to depict your own travels. Be better prepared on your next adventure, be it a big trip or a simple journey to your local botanical garden, etc. Alternatively, paint from the comfort of your home, delve into your photos of a favorite past trip.

For reference/practice, Susan will share photos of various trips to northern France to create a “pretend” journey. However, you can also use your own reference photos.

By making your own *concertina (accordion) book, you will learn how easily you can depict a story line that gives joyful memories each time you revisit your sketchbook.

Consider this a crash course! You can write books on color theory for artists, and there are plenty… But this class is designed to teach you how to control the dial of color change and intensity. Understanding the color wheel and how each of our pigments are positioned tells a lot about mixing behaviors. Ever get that muddy color you didn’t expect? You’ll get to know how it happened, and how to avoid it.

Mixing the right color doesn’t have to be a mystery. With a bit of knowledge about certain pigments and their characteristics, we can develop an instinct for efficiently and accurately mixing color. In this workshop we’ll talk about the universality of primaries, and the warming, cooling, and neutralizing of hues. Most importantly, we’ll evaluate the role of tinting and shading while still maintaining richness of chroma… Or not… The point is we’re in control!

This open and interactive course will spotlight my palette, work surface, and reference in real time, so you can directly see how I mix and apply paint. Questions are encouraged at any time. At the start of each day, special short demonstrations from any inquiries will be addressed, and then intermittently to describe the project process from start to finish.

    - Links to a video recording of each session will be provided, should you miss a class or want to review a session. Links remain available for 90 days.

    - Reference photos will be in the confirmation email.

This course is designed for those with little or no experience in watercolor. First and foremost, it’s all about committing a few rules to memory, being adventurous, and willing to work with a little of the unexpected as you practice!

Starting from the very beginning, on the first day, we will talk about different materials uses and surfaces - both the ones I recommend, and the ones you may already have or have questions about. The following three days we will work on techniques and small projects that present basic pigment mixing, brush technique, paint control, and surface handling. Afterwards, with a big confidence boost, you’ll be ready to tackle your next projects! Are you swimming in questions like “how do I…?” Then this class is for you.

This open and interactive course will spotlight my palette, work surface, and

reference in real time, so you can directly see how I mix and apply paint.

Questions are encouraged at any time. At the start of each day, special short demonstrations from any inquiries will be addressed, and then intermittently to describe the project process from start to finish.

    - Links to a video recording of each session will be provided, in case you miss a class or want to review the session(s). Links remain available for 90 days.

    - Reference Photos used in class will be in the confirmation email.
